Welcome to the MSU Open Source Software Initiative!
This site serves as a meeting point for Open Source Software at Michigan State University. If you are interested in getting involved in open source development at MSU, check out the affiliated projects; if you're running a project, stop by the affiliates page to see how you can join us and how we might be able to help you.
If you have specific questions or just want to get in touch, join the moss mailing list; you can send e-mail to it directly at moss@lists.idyll.org.
Goals and Initiatives
Open Source Software thrives on communication, and while there are quite a few people at Michigan State who are working on or with open source, these people are spread all over the place and don't get to talk all that much. This site will serve to connect various disparate projects and interests related to open source and hopefully will lead to better coordination when looking for funding or institutional support.
Specific initiatives:
- the Python Buildhaus project will support cross-platform Python projects, as long as they're open source.
- the MSU Snakebite Project is coordinating with Snakebite, Inc. to help host and manage a heterogenous distributed network of build servers for open source projects.
- integrating open source technology and approaches into various classes:
- CSE 231, Intro Programming, teaches Python.
- CSE 491, Database-backed Web Programming, teaches Python, sqlite, jQuery, twill, and Selenium.
Joining MOSS
You don't really need to do anything at all to join MOSS, although I'd suggest signing up for the mailing list. If you want Web site editing privileges, get the password from Titus Brown (ude.usm|btc#ude.usm|btc) and please go sign up!
